When out on a ride, many cyclists choose to wear clothing constructed from wicking material. The purpose of a wicking fabric is to draw the sweat away from the skin to keep the wearer feel dry and comfortable. The transfer of moisture happens due to an encouraged capillary action, where the material used encourages moisture to move away from the skin. When moisture is moved from the skin into non-absorbent clothing, it has more surface area and will evaporate faster. The combination of wicking and breathability in a lot our fabrics, ensures moisture moves away from the skin and is then allowed to escape. It’s the construction of the fabric we use that directs water away from the body and allows body moisture and vapours to be released, rather than membranes, coatings or laminates which can also be used to keep the wearer dry. This means that perspiration can be moved away from the body more effectively, as both liquid water and water vapour are transmitted through the material and allowed to escape.
